MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Exporters show resilience despite the currency challenges.

The Performance Manufacturing Index (PMI) results out this week for manufacturing (many of these respondents are also exporters) show the sector is still expanding overall despite various challenges for some sectors.  It was particularly good to see the lower South Island bouncing back with good expansion results (Otago/Southland) and that Canterbury/Westland has continued a solid run of expansion results which has been going on for the last four months.  No doubt this will only gather pace as the Christchurch rebuild kicks in. Meanwhile Canterbury exporters keep doing their thing despite the challenges.

It was great to see Wellington exporters out in force this week, displaying their diversity in an Expo at Parliament Buildings.  It was a great day, organised by the Wellington City Council to remind politicians and Wellingtonians that there is more to Wellington than its civil servants. From ICT companies to creative companies, boutique beer, high-tech manufacturing, boat building, truly inspiring stuff and a good reminder that exporters should try to remain visible at home.  Visibility can bring unexpected opportunities and inspire others to follow your lead.

  • Trade Update - WTO report highights need for talks

In its review of trade restrictions introduced over the six months ending April 2011, the WTO notes that while in the immediate aftermath of the global financial crisis, beginning in 2008, there was not a significant upsurge in trade protectionist measure, there is an alarming trend developing.

The WTO warns that the “collective resolve and political courage to resist protectionism in the context of the global financial crisis which was a positive characteristic over the past few years may now be under stress”. More...
